Learning how to back up data is very easy and your operating systems can automate this process for you after spending a few minutes setting up the wizard.

Surprisingly 43% of computer users lose important documents each year, which is unnecessary considering that there is a free tool included in Windows to create backups.

Think of how much of your life is kept on your computer, and how investing at least in one or two reliable external hard drives to store your backup can benefit you.

When you first connect your external hard drive to your computer you might automatically be prompted with several options, including one that says to Use this drive for backup. Clicking this option will open the Backup tool.

If your computer is turned off, and you have already connected the hard drive, then type backup in the search box that comes up when you hit the Start button and you´ll see a list of options, including one that says Backup and Restore.

Once this utility is opened, you´ll be able to Set a backup if you have never done this before. Next, chose the place where you want to save your backup. In this case I suggest using an external hard drive.

Now choose what you want to back up, or let the system do it for you. You may also tell Windows how often to back up your files, and after these few clicks, your backup will begin. That is why I mentioned that learning how to back up data is very easy with Windows.

I also suggested using one or two external hard disk drives because a real backup not only consist of saving your files on a secondary media, but looking out to avoid disasters.

If your computer and backup devices are located at the same place, then you will lose vital information if a disaster hits.

While you will need to be disciplined to keep up with this, you should take your secondary hard drive to another location far from your primary drive. This will at least diminish potential data loss in a great way.

But, understanding how to back up data in these days implies realizing that saving those precious pictures, emails, music and more on a remote server is the best full complement to conventional backups using a secondary hard drive as explained above. One should not be done without the other, but you shouldn't rely solely on one method either.
